Ticks

Ticks Live in your pet’s environment

Ticks cannot fly or jump. They lay in wait on vegetation for a host to brush past in a position known as “Questing”. Ticks are arachnids, they hold the vegetation with their third and fourth pairs of legs with their front pair ready to grab onto the unsuspecting host.

Ticks can be found anywhere there is vegetation.

FleaSolve protects against all UK tick species including the most common Rhipicephalus spp, Dermacentor spp & Ixodes spp, which includes the Ixodes Ricinus, a tick responsible for the transmission of Lyme Disease.

Ticks infections are possible all year round. If your pet has a tick, you should act immediately.

How to check your pet for ticks

Before engorgement & feeding on the hosts blood ticks can be hard to spot. After feeding ticks increase in size 150 times. Ticks grow from the size of a sesame seed to roughly the size of a coffee bean.

Once they start to feed, ticks can swell up to 200 times their original size, sometimes reaching the size of a coffee bean. So, it’s important to regularly check your pet for ticks, paying close attention to areas where the fur is thinner.

Run your fingers through your pet’s fur with gentle pressure to feel for any small bumps.

Looks for ticks in the following areas:

  • In and around the ears
  • Around the eyelids
  • Under the collar
  • Under the front legs
  • Between the back legs
  • Between the toes
  • Around the tail

Tips and Information about Ticks

Ticks are found in wherever there is vegetation. Gardens, woodlands, grasslands, riverbanks etc. Unable to fly or jump, ticks are opportunists. They are able to live for over 90 days without feeding. Ticks lay in wait for a host to brush past & it is in that moment they move from the vegetation to the host for engorgement.

Ticks like to attach in a crevice, in the joint areas or around the neck. Using an anticoagulant to prevent blood clotting, the tick cuts through the epidermis and feeds for between 10 minutes and two hours. The pet will normally feel nothing. It is important to remove the tick as soon as possible. Either with a tick removal tool, or by treating with FleaSolve® to kill the tick and protect your pet from questing ticks looking for a host in your pets’ environment.

In the UK the most common species of ticks is Ixodes Ricinus. This tick is a potential carrier of Lyme disease.

Tick species Dermacentor reticulatus can transmit the deadly parasite Babesia. This parasite can be fatal to dogs. Dermacentor reticulatus is currently found throughout the UK.

Statistically, around one in three ticks carry an infectious disease that could harm your pet. The engorgement sites of ticks can also cause irritation or bacterial infections.

Use FleaSolve® to prevent ticks attaching to your pet.
